FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Snow rules on Mt. Hamilton

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Snow rules on Mt. Hamilton

Description

Lick Observatory will be closed to the public whenever snow is present on Mt. Hamilton. The observatory has installed new security gates to restrict public access after 6:00 pm when conditions are clear and at anytime when snow is present. Stopping or parking is prohibited on observatory property or on Mt. Hamilton Road when snow is present. Parking along the upper 19 miles of Mt. Hamilton Road is always restricted to Emergency Parking Only. Vehicles parked along Mt. Hamilton Road or on observatory property, when snow is present, will be subject to citation. These measures are necessary to prevent traffic and parking gridlock and other public safety concerns on Mt. Hamilton Road when snow is present. The observatory conducts science 363 days and nights a year and issues related to snow play traffic have proven detrimental to observatory access and operations. If there is any measurable snow over the next 24-36 hours I will upload high-definition video to our Lick Observatory YouTube account and send you the link. Please accompany any story related to snow on Mt. Hamilton with the important public information I've outlined above. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you, John Wareham Deputy Director Lick Observatory 831.459.5933
